You might remember that in 2014 the EU put out a new law that banned the sale of some of the most powerful vacuums on the market at the time, prohibiting manufacturers from making or importing vacuums that had a motor exceeding 1,600 watts and with a further reduction to 900 watts in 3 years time.
Introduced as part of the EU’s energy efficiency directive design to tackle climate change, it was unwelcome news to a lot of home owners and especially those with severe allergies that relied on that extra power to pick up more allergens.
The legislation was criticised at the time with consumer groups pointing out the fact that the lower wattage vacuums will just be getting used for twice as long as the higher wattage ones, which then defeats the reasoning behind the legislation in the first place.
After the referendum:
Before the ban a lot of the top-rated vacuum cleaners on the market where exceeding 1,600 watts, so with us leaving the EU there is the potential of the ban being lifted and these vacuums once again becoming available to be purchased by the UK consumer as well as other electrical good that may come under fire from the EU in the future, such as hairdryers, kettles, and lawnmowers.
