Slate Floor Cleaning & Restoration

Specialist Slate Floor Cleaning in Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire

Slate is a striking natural stone that brings texture, depth and a sense of permanence to any kitchen, hallway or conservatory. But over time it becomes dull, coated in wax build-up, and marked by surface scratches that no amount of regular mopping will shift. If your slate floor has lost its dark, rich lustre, a professional clean and reseal is usually all it takes to bring it back.

Crisp & Brite have been cleaning and restoring slate floors for over 40 years. Our team understands the specific challenges slate presents — from old wax stripping to dealing with the fine surface flaking that poorly maintained slate can develop — and we have the equipment and products to tackle all of it.

Common Problems with Slate Floors

  • Wax build-up — years of applying polish or wax dressing turns slate floors milky and yellow

  • Dullness — the natural sheen disappears as the surface becomes coated in traffic dirt

  • Scratches and scuffs — particularly on high-traffic areas like hallways and kitchens

  • White tide marks — mineral deposits left by hard water and poor rinsing

  • Grout discolouration — grout lines that have turned grey or black with ingrained dirt

These are all problems we deal with routinely. In the vast majority of cases, a professional clean and reseal transforms the floor completely — no replacement needed.

Our Slate Cleaning Process

Wax and residue stripping

Old wax, floor dressings and polish build-up are stripped back using specialist stripping solutions, giving us a clean base to work from and revealing the true condition of the slate beneath.

Deep cleaning

We use professional rotary cleaning machines with appropriate brushes and pads to deep clean the slate surface and grout lines, extracting the loosened dirt and residue as we go.

Rinse and dry

The floor is rinsed thoroughly and given time to dry completely before any sealant is applied. Sealing wet or damp stone traps moisture and causes problems further down the line.

Sealing

We apply a penetrating impregnating sealant specifically formulated for slate. This soaks into the stone and protects it from within, rather than sitting as a surface coating that can peel or yellow. The result is a floor that is protected, easy to maintain, and has its full natural colour depth restored.

Slate Floor Restoration

Where slate has been heavily scratched, is flaking, or has areas of old paint or adhesive contamination, we can carry out a more intensive restoration process. This may involve grinding back the surface, treating problem areas, and finishing with multiple coats of sealant to achieve a consistent result across the whole floor.
